Ugly as Sin
Of course it is. You wouldn’t have to figure out how to overcome sin if it wasn’t attractive. Sin promises to enhance your life, to make you a better person, to enrich your experiences.
Sin doesn’t just promise pleasure. It promises you success, victory, glamour, excitement, and virility. One moment it assures you that you will be the cool rebel, earning everyone’s respect. The next moment it guarantees that you can be just like everybody else. Once you learn how to overcome sin in one form, it undergoes a metamorphosis and takes on a newer, more attractive form.
The only way to overcome sin is to walk in the power of the gospel and get connected with the Spirit of God.
You can’t overcome sin on your own. You might conquer your anger but end up feeding your arrogance. You might overcome your laziness only to develop a critical spirit. You might master your self-righteousness but then give in to lust. No. Sin is too aggressive for you all by yourself.
But there is a biblical solution for how to overcome sin. Jesus says, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” (John 15.4)
You can only learn how to overcome sin by pressing in hard to God. There are no other options. There’s no plan B.
So how’s your prayer life right now?
